Mopix is the part of the ReMath project which conducts the research and development on the use of digital media in mathematics education. In particular, a new mobile Flash-based application should be
developed to aid young people (14-18) learning mathematics.
Design is based on the following approach:
- using construction kit to build (more) complex objects and/or characters
- having equations associated with them (the equations should be dropped on the objects so defining their behaviour and properties )
- inspecting and monitoring (in a visual, symbolic or graphical way) the creations
- sharing it with other people , students and teachers
I this environment, which includes animation, graphical representation, oral communication, students are supposed to learn through trying and discovering for themselves. Also, different students could work on different aspects of the problem and collaborate with others in order to solve it.
Example: A student could build a scene in which their character throws a ball. Others participate in a game of 'catching' the ball.
Platform: Sony Playstation Portable
Initial design steps: The goal of this learning environment is for learners to iteratively construct their own game like environment in which characters and events are determined by the use of applied mathematics. To do this they are supposed to progress through a number of steps and share the construction they create. These steps are: construct - animate - investigate - collaborate. The first sketches show these steps and from there, prototyping started.
